Game Objective

Shadow over Banner Hill is a choose-your-own-adventure game presented within a 3D world. The most important attribute you can have as a player of the game is curiosity. You should be wandering about, investigating, questioning, in an effort to discover the truth hidden within the narrative.

The game is heavily influenced by the writings of the early 20th-century horror author H.P. Lovecraft. As anyone who has read Lovecraft knows, his stories are all built on the premise that what we generally perceive as reality is in fact a thin veil atop an unspeakable horror. Typically, the horror in question is just behind, just out of reach. It's found behind the locked door, outside in the yard of a house at night, in the dark woods. The essential premise is that the unseen horror can be more terrifying to the mind of the reader than that which is sketched out in detail.

Shadow over Banner Hill is set in no particular place but the environment is evocative of the Northeast of the United States, where Lovecraft was born and raised and in which most of his stories are set. The game begins with your character alone on a road at night on their way home. You receive a message from a friend asking you to meet them at the stone circle on Banner Hill. Banner hill is known by the locals as a place where strange things happen and you've never been there at night before. You have to decide whether to push against your fears and to indulge your curiosity or to continue home.
